I have been a salmon fisherman since 14 years old. I worked alongside my father and brothers, both gillnetting and trolling. I enjoyed the continues salmon fishing boom of the late eighties, until the steady decline of salmon fishing in the later half of the nineties. Also during that time, I have seen lots of changes in the fifteen years of halibut long lining i have done. the shotgun halibut openings as they were called, to the individual vessel quotas, what the fisheries and oceans have instilled upon us fisherman. The BC coast was my playground for the 6 years I was a spot prawn fisherman and shrimp dragger. I marvelled at the beauty of the Queen Charlotte/Haida Gwaii islands, when I rockfish long lined, Cod jigged, and Cod Skinned (trolling for lingcod). Lastly, I was awed by the vast openness of the ocean, several hundred nautical miles off shore tuna trolling.
